Following jury trial, Brunswick man sentenced to prison time for felony death by vehicle
A Brunswick County man will spend the next six to eight years in prison for his role in a 2020 death.
According to a Friday news release from the Brunswick County District Attorney's Office, a jury convicted Jason McCoy this week on counts of felony death by a motor vehicle and driving while license revoked.
According to the released, McCoy was driving on Royal Oak Road near Shallotte on April 18, 2020, when he ran off the road, over corrected and collided with a tree. The passenger in the car, Carter Milligan, was ejected from the car. First responders declared Milligan dead at the scene.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash, the release said, and the North Carolina State Crime Lab confirmed the presence of cocaine and marijuana in McCoy's blood.
McCoy was sentenced to 73 to 100 months — roughly six to eight years — in prison.
