Fond du Lac artist shows work at Langdon Divers gallery and more news in weekly dose

FOND DU LAC - Fond du Lac artist Nina Schmidt will show her work to the Langdon Divers Community Gallery at the Fond du Lac Public Library. Her new exhibit, “Ripples from Pebbles: A Retrospective of Beautiful Moments Found in Simple Places,” is on display now through Oct. 3.

An opening reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14 in the gallery.

“It's been nearly nine years since Nina has shown her work in the Langdon Divers Gallery, and I'm so glad she's showing again,” Mel Kolstad, volunteer curator of the Langdon Divers Community Gallery, said in a news release. “This is a great mixture of new and older works, and I think patrons will enjoy this show."

The gallery is open whenever the Fond du Lac Public Library is open at 32 Sheboygan St.

The library also will host programs on homeschooling, becoming a foster parent as well as a circus history program.

Homeschool 101 will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 in the McLane Room. Led by the Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association, the program will offer a look at what is involved in homeschooling and what the organization is about.

The History at Home program Sept. 14 will be “Bareback Riders and Educated Elephants: Wisconsin's Amazing Circus Heritage.” It will be held at 6 p.m. and attendees can learn about Wisconsin circuses.

Families considering becoming foster parents are invited to stop in for the Foster Family Storytime at 10 a.m. Sept. 16. Library staff will read and sing about all kinds of families, and guests can learn more about foster services in Fond du Lac County.

SSM Health Ripon and Waupun leader to also take on Baraboo

SSM Health has named DeAnn Thurmer to oversee operations at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital - Baraboo. As current president, she will continue to over see SSM Health’s Ripon Community and Waupun Memorial Hospitals.

Thurmer lead the mergers of Ripon Medical Center and Waupun Memorial Hospital with Agnesian HealthCare and then as they became part of SSM Health. A registered nurse, she has received the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award and has served as a health care executive since 1995.

“Having worked in this area for more than 35 years, I have a true passion for rural health care,” Thurmer said in a news release. “St. Clare has a wonderful reputation for quality care as a CMS Five-Star hospital, and I am committed to assisting our health care team in continuing this exceptional patient-focused culture.”

Thurmer succeeds Kyle Nondorf, who served as interim president of St. Clare Hospital - Baraboo since 2021. Nondorf has been promoted to regional vice president for Acute Care Operations across SSM Health Wisconsin’s northern markets.

Marian offers bridge courses for social work license

Marian University has been certified by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services to offer five “bridge courses” for those who would like to obtain a license in social work. It is open to people who hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice and human services.

A bridge course helps one move to a different discipline. Students can take classes at the Fond du Lac camps or online.

The five bridge courses are: Social Welfare Policy and Services, Social Work Methods: Individuals, Social Work Methods: Groups/Families, Social Work Methods: Comm./Org., and Human Behavior in the Social Environment.

Charity Open for Agnesian foundation raises more than $490,000

The Agnesian HealthCare Foundation recently hosted the 35th annual Charity Open and raised more than $490,000. Funds raised help support SSM Health at Home Hospice services, within the greater Fond du Lac area, and helps patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

The event included dinner and featured the story of a local family benefiting from SSM Health at Home Hospice care. The Open was led by Drs. Robert Bertram and Sarika Parikh Bertram as senior chairpersons, with Jeff and Andrea Nuss as junior chairpersons.

Residents can get rid of hazardous waste at drop-off event

A household hazardous waste disposal drop-off will be held 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Municipal Service Center, 530 Doty St.

The free service is for city residents only. Staff will check photo identification. The city is working with Veolia Environmental Services to ensure proper disposal.

Acceptable items include aerosol cans, floor care products, furniture polish, drain cleaners, bathroom cleaners, bug sprays, metal polish, oven cleaners, tile cleaners, disinfectants, gasoline, oil mixtures, auto repair products, transmission fluid, paints (oil and metal based), other oils/cleaners, antifreeze, brake fluid, paint thinner and stripper, varnish, chemical fertilizers, photographic chemicals, artists’ paints, fluorescent bulbs, gun cleaning solvents, fiberglass epoxy, thermometers, fungicides, herbicides, rat poison, moth balls, pool chemicals, thermostats and mercury.

Products will say caution, toxic, corrosive, pesticide, combustible, poison, flammable, warning, danger or reactive.

Items that will not be accepted include cylinders (propane), radioactives, explosives, biologicals, medical waste, ammunition and commercial wastes.

Participants should not exit their vehicle and items to be disposed of should be placed in the trunk or bed of a truck.

Organizations looking for ways to interest new farmers amid shortage

The Farmland Access Hub and Renewing the Countryside, along with Foxhead Regenerative Agriculture Project and Golden Sands RC&D, are working together to address critical farming issues. Many farmers are nearing retiring age while there’s a shortage of new farmers. Lands are also being lost to development.

To remedy these issues by creating educational and networking opportunities for landowners and farmers, the Hub will offer Landowner/Landseeker Meet & Greet events in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa in September. The Wisconsin event will be 1 to 5 p.m Sept. 12 at Vines & Rushes Winery, Ripon.

Fond du Lac golfers help raise funds at Pilsl Scholarship outing

The Waushara Country Club recently hosted the third annual Eric Pilsl Scholarship golf outing. There were 20 "marathon" golfers as well as several other participants. Fond du Lac golfers were Andy Pilsl, Eric's brother, Dan Nett, and Brian Wilderman, Plymouth, formerly of Fond du Lac, who completed 60 holes.
