Fond du Lac man dies in drowning at Breezy Hill Campground

BYRON – A Fond du Lac man, later identified as Paul Becker, 39, who was at Breezy Hill Campground in town of Byron Thursday with a local organization that works to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has died after drowning in a swimming pond.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the county’s Communications Center received a 911 call shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday reporting a person trapped under an inflatable floating dock in a swimming pond at the campground.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office deputies, the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Fond du Lac Ambulance, Eden Fire Department, Eden First Responders, Campbellsport Ambulance, Campbellsport Dive Team and Campbellsport Fire Department all responded to the scene of the campground at N4177 Cearns Lane.

Before dive equipment arrived at the scene, two members of the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team removed their patrol gear and entered the water to begin search efforts.

At 6:26 p.m., Becker, who was unresponsive, was recovered in 10 feet of water. He was taken to shore, where emergency medical personnel started resuscitation efforts.

An ambulance then transported Becker to St. Agnes Hospital, where at 7:24 p.m. doctors declared him deceased.

The sheriff’s office said no further information would be immediately released. Authorities said foul play is not suspected and the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
