Fond du Lac officials finalize contracts with local animal rescues, humane society

FOND DU LAC — Three animal rescues and the Fond du Lac Humane Society will continue providing animal control services in Fond du Lac in 2024 with finalized city contracts.

According to a news release from the city Dec. 8, Critter Junction Pet Rescue, Sandi Paws Rescue Inc. and Lucky Dog Small Breed Rescue will provide a number of animal control services as humane officer organizations, including taking in stray and abandoned cats and dogs, and reuniting pets with their owners.

The Fond du Lac Humane Society's contract allows the organization to serve as an animal control facility to continue housing stray and abandoned animals.

“The dedication and tireless efforts of each of these organizations over the years have played an integral role in delivering essential animal welfare services to our community,” Fond du Lac City Manager Joe Moore said in the release.

The four organizations negotiated the contracts with the city in November, and the three rescues will contribute to 24/7 animal control support in the city under a uniform payment structure.

Contract negotiations for the humane society started when the organization's original contract expired at the end of 2022, when the organization hoped to update the terms of the contract to address cost inflation and animal overpopulation.

The new contract was delayed, however, and in February, the organization legally wasn't able to accept strays until a new agreement was signed. A one-year contract was then signed in March that would cover the rest of 2023.

During the humane society's negotiations, the three rescues took on stray animal responsibilities in a partnership with each other, and entered into agreements with the city this spring as well.

According to the humane society's Facebook page, the terms of the new 2024 agreement depart from previous contracts, including "the city's decision to reduce overall funding for animal control services, in addition to engaging the services of other local rescue organizations."

"While we acknowledge the evolving landscape and uncertainties that come with these changes, our commitment to serving this community remains steadfast and unwavering," the post reads. "Ensuring the well-being of lost and stray animals is still our top priority as we move forward."
