FOND DU LAC — The Fond du Lac Public Library Allen J. Buechel Branch will be a little bit easier to access in the new year.

The library's east-side branch will close Jan. 1 to move from the far northwest corner of the Festival Foods plaza to 1137 E. Johnson St. on the other side of the plaza, between GNC and FreshFit Cafe.

"This places the Buechel Branch in a much more convenient spot: right next to stores that community members are already visiting," library director Jon Mark Bolthouse said in a news release. "We expect that our patrons will appreciate the convenience of the new location."

In addition to a more centralized location, the new space will include a new book drop inside the foyer, with 24/7 access to drop off materials.

The exact reopening date is not yet set, but is anticipated for late January, with a grand opening to follow in February.

During the transition, any checked-out materials will need to be dropped off at the library's main branch, 32 Sheboygan St., and holds will need to be picked up at the main branch as well.

Existing aspects of the branch — including the children’s corner and lifestyle collection for cooking, crafting, home repair and more — will continue to be offered when the branch reopens.

The branch opened in 2011 as FDLPL Express, and was renamed in April in honor of County Executive Allen Buechel, who died in March. Last year, the Buechel Branch served more than 7,500 community members and circulated about 17,500 items. The branch has about 11,500 books and DVDs in its collection.

Through Dec. 31, the Buechel Branch is open 2 to 6 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends. For more information, visit fdlpl.org.
