Fondue In a Bag Is a Holiday Season Savior
The word "fondue" has certain connotations, among them cheerful post-skiing Alpine dinners and mustard-toned pots from the 1970s. You might think, because that's what we've all been led to believe, that fondue is for fancy people. You need to have tiny forks and maybe a Swiss cookbook to do it, right?
Nope. Fondue can be super fancy, for sure. But it can also just be a giant hearty pot of melted cheese that you get to dip things in and call it dinner. You don't need a fondue pot or anything. if you have a slow cooker or Instant pot, you can make the fondue, set it to warm, pour it in there, and happily dunk crusty bread and broccoli spears in it for the rest of the evening. Even if you don't, you can put it in a Dutch oven or stock pot and reheat it gently once it starts to go cool—it still takes a while.

But if the idea of making fondue is just too much, with all the frenzy around the holidays approaching, I'm thrilled to say that there is a solution for you. It's fondue in a bag, and it is exactly what it says. Just throw it in a pot, warm it all the way through, and serve it.

That might sound like throwing a bunch of nacho cheese sauce in a pot and calling it fondue which, yes, is absolutely something I would encourage, but in this case, the fondue has a slightly more highbrow origin. The company that makes it is Emmi Roth, a cheese partnership between Wisconsin and Switzerland that imports high quality cheese from Switzerland as well as distributing some excellent American cheeses.
Emmi's Cheese Fondu tastes really good on its own, though if you wanted, you could adjust the flavor with more white wine or seasonings. It's also the perfect thing to have around this time of year, when I accidentally find myself hosting people without much preparation. Grab a baguette, heat a bag of fondue, set it out with the wine, and you've got an elegant party snack.
