Food deals, seals and the 'Karate Kid': Can't-miss events this weekend

The midterm election is coming up, so you’ll have some decisions to make come Tuesday. But before hitting the polls, enjoy the weekend with some great local events.

Get your fill at area restaurants, watch some seals, laugh at a comedy show, take in a concert and maybe even leave Newport County for some fun. Here’s what’s on tap this weekend:

Go out to eat for Newport Restaurant Week

The 16th annual Newport Restaurant Week kicks off Nov. 4 and runs through Nov. 13, offering diners exceptional culinary experiences from more than 50 participating restaurants. Specials include prix-fixe menus, gift card promotions, BOGO deals, complimentary add-ons and more deals and discounts.

This season’s restaurant roster offers a variety of unique farm-to-table and dock-to-plate dishes bursting with autumnal flavors.

New this year is the introduction of a Foodie Film Festival at the JPT Film + Event Center. The festival presents a week of culinary-themed films in the world-class art house cinema.

Restaurant deals are added on a rolling basis. Learn more about the food and the films at discovernewport.org/newport-restaurant-week.

Take a Newport Harbor seal tour

On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6, the Jamestown Newport Ferry will offer seal tours on Newport Harbor. Hop aboard Vessel Katherine and pass by Citing Rock and Rose Island and a few other nearby spots grey seals frequent this time of year.

The tour is one hour (no narration) and binoculars are provided. The boat departs from 1 East Ferry Wharf in Jamestown. It is recommended you wear warm clothes (and maybe bring a blanket) as it can get chilly on the water. Visit jamestownnewportferry.com/cruises to learn more and purchase tickets.

Attend a Newport Live concert at the Jamestown Arts Center

Virginia-based singer-songwriter Dori Freeman on Saturday night will perform at the Jamestown Arts Center, 18 Valley St., as part of the Newport Live concert series. Her 2021 album, Ten Thousand Roses, was written during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I really observed and appreciated nature during that time,” she said.

Natural elements such as storm-clouds, wildflowers, and spiders show up as motifs throughout the record, which examines everything from being deeply in love with someone to realizing that you don’t need another person to complete you.
