Food drives at United stores are successes thanks to scout, parents

I had one busy, tiring but productive day May 6.

I was a main organizer for the third Texas Trails Boy Scout council food drive to benefit Food Bank of West Central Texas. Scouts covered three of the four Abilene United Supermarkets and collected 3,391 pounds of food. In addition, $895 of (unsolicited) cash was donated.

My personal thanks to all who participated. Hoping I won’t miss anybody, these were participating troops and packs:

Cub Scout Pack 260 from the Wylie area; Pack 212, Grace Lutheran Church; Scouts BSA troop 219 from Tuscola; and at least one or two members from Pack 271, Bonham Elementary, and Troop 258, Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest.

That leaves out two troops to which I wanted to give a shout-out.

Troop 232, Highland Church of Christ, volunteered less than 24 hours before the event to cover the Judge Ely location all morning, filling our final hole. And Case, a member of Troop 206, and his mom, who was the only member to show up for an afternoon shift and stayed a bit longer than planned so that others could be shifted over to cover that store.

Again, thanks to all those mentioned. And if I missed anyone, please contact me (find information below) and I will gladly mention you. You deserve it.

There were a couple of extra snags this year so I didn’t have an opportunity to reach out to other organizations as we have in past years until the last minute. We plan to have this event again next year, perhaps a week or so earlier, and hope to get it on organization calendars several months in advance.
