Barbecue like this will be in the spotlight at "Smoke on the Falls," the barbecue competition at Noccalula Falls that this year will be part of a Food Network series highlighting barbecue across the country.

The City of Gadsden’s annual “Smoke on the Falls” barbecue competition will be one of six competitions nationwide to be featured in an upcoming Food Network show.

The show will premiere in July, according to a news release from the city, and will focus on barbecue.

In addition, the network will bring celebrity chef Michael Symon to Gadsden for the event.

“Smoke on the Falls” is a Kansas City Barbeque Society certified event presented by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. The event will hold its 13th competition on April 9, as part of a weekend of activities that include Art on the Rocks craft show.

“In 2021, dozens of of teams from 18 different states competed for thousands of dollars in prize money in the Professional and Backyard divisions and previous competitors were even featured on international teams,” the city said in a press release, “More than 125 KCBS certified judges travel to Gadsden for Smoke on the Falls.”

Janet Tarrance, event supervisor for the city, said, “It’s an honor to be selected by the Food Network,” adding that it's a “huge deal” for the city because she has personally “dreamed of being featured on a show like this.”

The network will have a crew onsite interviewing contestants, sampling food and assisting in the awards presentations.

Symon, an Ohio native, has hosted several Food Network and Cooking Channel programs, has been one of Food Network's "Iron Chefs" and was a co-host of ABC's "The Chew." He operates restaurants in Cleveland (his hometown), Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and has written six cookbooks, four of which were New York Times best sellers.
