Food news: Cuban food truck opens, chef breakfast, fall festival, BBQ circus celebration

ASHEVILLE - Cuban cuisine arrives along the French Broad River; local chefs break bread (and eggs) for a charitable cause; free fall festivities are planned for Tunnel Road; and a circus-style celebration is coming to the South Slope.

The wait is over for the opening of Guajiro Cuban Comfort Food.

On Oct. 6, the permanent food trailer parked outside Cotton Mill Studios served its first meals. During the soft opening, Guajiro will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily at 122 Riverside Drive in the River Arts District. The menu is limited and available while supplies last.

Breakfast benefit

What is it about breakfast that makes it taste even better at dinnertime?

Find out at the upcoming fundraiser, Blueprint Breakfast for Dinner, hosted by Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. The one-night-only, outdoor dining experience will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Rabbit Rabbit, 75 Coxe Ave.

The local chefs pitching in to create a menu of breakfast-inspired dishes are:

Tickets cost $120 per person, which includes two complimentary drinks. A cash bar will be available for additional purchases.

The Firecracker Jazz Band will provide entertainment, plus there will be door prizes. And Habitat homeowners will share their stories.

Proceeds are to support the construction of Asheville Habitat’s Blueprint Breakfast House, an "energy-efficient, affordable home in the diverse, multi-generational neighborhood" called New Heights, located in West Asheville. Construction is scheduled to begin this month.

Fall family fun

A retail collective is hosting a family-friendly seasonal extravaganza.

Asheville Market Fall Festival will be 12-5 p.m. Oct. 15 at Asheville Market Shopping Plaza, 4 S. Tunnel Road, which includes Whole Foods and other local and regional businesses.

The Asheville Market will have music, a pumpkin patch, arts and crafts, a kids zone, face painting, games and henna tattoos. Treats will include ice cream and $4 pints of beer and other food and drink specials.

Bear’s barbecue banger

After a year of construction, Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ’s South Slope restaurant and bar is now open. To celebrate the achievement, Bear’s Smokehouse will host a grand opening party featuring the spectacular performers of Imagine Circus.

The event will be from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Oct. 15 at 135 Coxe Ave. Admission is free.

In addition to aerialists and other circus acts, music will be provided by Hot Club Asheville. Plus, there will be tarot card readings, carnival games and face painting. And feast on cotton candy cocktails, local craft beer and, of course, Bear’s menu of barbecue and more.
