German ski jumper Karl Geiger decided to treat himself over the Christmas holidays rather than sticking to a strict diet ahead of the Four Hills tournament starting on Friday.

The highlight of the men's World Cup ski-jumping season takes place in four venues in Germany and Austria over the next week. It begins in Geiger's hometown of Oberstdorf, where he is one of the favourites having decided to cut out stress in the build-up.

"We just took it easy and relaxed. There was plenty to eat. Raclette on Christmas Eve, dumplings with mushroom sauce, red cabbage and game the next day. It was very tasty and you're surrounded by your favourite people," the 30-year-old told reporters.

He especially savoured the days with his family and daughter Luisa. "We appreciate our time more. I make sure that I consciously enjoy the time," he added.

Alongside Geiger, German duo Andreas Wellinger and Pius Paschke are also among the contenders, led by Austria's Stefan Kraft.

"I'm really looking forward to the competition, especially now in Oberstdorf. It's going to be really cool," said Geiger, who won on his home hill in 2020 but knows the last overall Four Hills champion from Germany was Sven Hannawald in 2001-02.

"Christmas was very relaxed. I thought relatively little about ski jumping. Now we'll see how we start."
