Food trucks to deliver free Shake Shack and Milk Bar treats to voters waiting in long lines

No voter will go hungry this election season.

With the pandemic and voter suppression efforts in full swing to discourage voters from showing up to the polls for this presidential election, the nonprofit Pizza to the Polls and Uber Eats have rolled out a partnership that will surely get people out.

A fleet of food trucks will be cruising across the country to provide “snacks, treats, and good vibes” to polling sites that are expecting long lines in major cities such as Phoenix, Los Angles, Tampa, Atlanta, Louisville, Reno, Milwaukee, New York City, Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, and Houston.

Between Vote Early Day on Oct. 24 and Election Day on Nov. 3, more than 180 vehicles will be sent out 25 cities to serve up individually wrapped vittles and drinks provided by Shake Shack, Milk Bar and local favorites while playing music and celebrating civic engagement.

All the food will be free and professionally trained workers wearing masks, gloves and equipped with hand sanitizer and disinfectant to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“We’re already seeing a record number of people voting in places like Virginia,” Pizza to the Polls co-founder Scott Duncombe said in a statement. “Hunger is the last thing that should hurt our elections. Our mission is to create the same enthusiasm that brought everyone to the polling site in the first place.”

The ride-sharing company is also assisting people to find their polling locations with an in-app poll-finding feature and also offering 50% off roundtrip rides to and from the polls.

“As we look ahead to this year’s election, we are committed to doing our part to make sure every citizen has access to vote,” Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “We hope that by giving people the ability to easily register to vote, request an absentee ballot and get to the polls via the Uber and Uber Eats apps, independent workers — and everyone who uses our platform — will have a stronger voice in our democracy. And in addition to providing resources on the Uber and Uber Eats platforms to help individuals register to vote and get to the polls, we are proud to announce that we are also giving employees the day off, feeding people in line to vote, and looking into other ways to unite the communities we serve on Election Day.”
