SunFest bites, Cinco fiestas and a favorite bar's farewell
That rumbling you hear in downtown West Palm is the sound of a massive, four-day music festival waking to life after a two-year sleep. SunFest is back and it brings with it a rush of concerts (49 of them), art displays, floating bars, interactive murals, finale-worthy fireworks and food, food, food.
If you’re headed to the waterfront in search of fest food, you’ll find some new bites here and there. But mostly, you’ll find the return of many SunFest favorites. You can read about them here.
Speaking of SunFest: If you catch the Melissa Etheridge performance Saturday afternoon, you might catch a glimpse of one of her most devoted fans. Barbara Abernathy will be the smiling woman in the “Etheridge Nation Warriors” T-shirt, holding up hand-made signs bearing song requests and other messages for her music idol. I had the honor of writing about Abernathy’s courageous fight against cancer and how the rock star lifted her on her most difficult days. Food for the soul.
Now, allow me to fast-forward to next week’s reason to party: Cinco de Mayo, the minor Mexican holiday Americans celebrate in major ways. To that point, here's a batch of celebrations to put on your radar.
Cinco spots for Cinco de Mayo
Bodega Taquería y Tequila’s “Blow-out Fiesta” – This new downtown West Palm Beach hot spot kicks off its Cinco celebration at 3 p.m. Thursday. Expect live music, boozy paletas, a churro cart, $9 Patron margaritas, $3 Cazadores tequila shots, Corona beer samplings and a free cocktail if you RSVP. (118 S. Cactus Grille’s Cinco bash – The newish Tex-Mex eatery, which took over the former Burger Bar space at the Donald Ross Village, will host an all-day celebration Thursday, offering unlimited house rocks margaritas, draft beers, select bites and deejayed music for $45 per person. Avocado Cantina’s annual fiesta – This Mexican-inspired restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens kicks off its Cinco bash at 5 p.m. Thursday, offering tacos-and-tequila pairing specials through the evening. Adding to the flavor: deejay-spun hits and a Latin dance band. (11701 Lake Victoria Gardens Ave. in the Downtown Palm Beach Gardens plaza, 561-766-2430)
El Camino’s Mariachi fiesta – The Delray Beach taquería, which will open a West Palm outpost soon, will host Mariachi bands to rev up the Cinco vibe on Thursday, May 5. Plus its usual early and late happy hour deals, which include $3 tacos and $5 scratch-made margaritas. Early happy hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m., late night from midnight to closing. PGA National’s Agave Festival – The revamped resort is starting a new tradition Thursday night by hosting a festive Cinco tasting party at its Honda Pavilion. On the menu: tacos, empanadas, pinchos, Mexican corn, churros and other street foods, plus tequila and mezcal tasting stations, mariachis, hand-rolled cigars and a fire dancer. The party goes from 5 to 8 p.m. All-inclusive tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased here. (400 Avenue of the Champions, Palm Beach Gardens)

Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium’s Tacos and Tequila Festival – The Jupiter-based baseball stadium will offer live Latin music, tacos and tequila on Saturday, May 7, the day the Palm Beach Cardinals play the St. Lucie Mets. The all-day fest, which kicks off at 11 a.m., is free when you buy a ticket to the game, which starts at 3 p.m. Tickets, which start at $12, can be purchased here. (4751 Main St. in Abacoa, Jupiter)
Goodbye Grub: Delray bar says farewell
Delray’s funky Death or Glory bar poured its final shots Monday night – which also marked its anniversary – before permanently closing its doors. But first there was an epic party, a “Funeral Bash” that promised to “put the fun back in funeral.”
That’s not the end of the story for the vintage house where Death or Glory operated for five years. The historic 1925-era house will welcome a revival of one of its various former inhabitants, The Falcon House bar, says Death or Glory owner Annie Blake.
Blake has teamed up with Sean Inglehart, co-founder of Boynton’s popular and creative Sweetwater whiskey and small-plates bar, in the new venture for the vintage house. It's a space Inglehart knows well – back in the day, he worked at the former Falcon House as a bar-back, a job that launched his hospitality career.
What’s the new concept for the new Falcon House? In a statement Thursday, Blake described it as “a local haunt with a sexy atmosphere, great cocktails and global street food.” She did not announce an opening date.
