Football: Big Central Player of the Week ballot for Week 3

Isaiah Barnes

North Brunswick

The senior contributed to a big North Brunswick defensive effort in the Raiders’ 33-7 win over Old Bridge. The defensive end had six tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. North Brunswick (3-0) has allowed a combined 17 points in its three wins.

Connor Laverty

Bernards

The junior quarterback accounted for five touchdowns in Bernards’ 35-0 win over Voorhees. He threw for 179 yards and four TDs, while completing 64 percent of his passes (11-for-17). Laverty also rushed for a touchdown (31 yards on three carries). The Mountaineers improved to 3-1.

Joseph Lepore

South River

The junior excelled on both sides of the ball as Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Pearson looked on in South River’s 31-0 win over Bound Brook. Lepore caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Parker Lane and scored on a 60-yard interception return. He also caught a screen pass and tossed it to Darius Armstrong, who scored on the 70-yard hook and ladder play.

Brett Makowsky

A.L. Johnson

The senior kicker/punter helped Johnson (3-0) remain undefeated with a 38-0 win over Metuchen. He went 5-for-5 in his point-after attempts, booted a 29-yard field goal and boomed a 55-yard punt.

Shawn Purcell

Manville

The senior was all over the field for the Mustangs in their 46-7 win over Dayton. The elusive Purcell rushed for 195 yards on nine carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 63, 59, 5 and 39 yards. He also caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Danny Wildgoose as Manville improved to 3-1.

Patrick Smith

South Plainfield

The explosive junior has a chance to produce a huge play every time he touches the ball. He rushed for 155 yards on seven carries in South Plainfield’s 53-30 win over North Plainfield. Smith scored on runs of 1, 18, 55 and 60 yards. He's rushed for 301 yards for the undefeated Tigers (3-0).
