Prep football: Castlewood, Deuel, Hamlin and De Smet win playoff openers

Area teams Castlewood, Deuel, Hamlin and De Smet each recorded first-round playoff victories in the South Dakota High School football playoffs on Thursday.

The state's Class 11AAA, 11AA and 11A teams concluded their regular seasons. That included Watertown's 39-6 11AA loss to second-rated Tea Area at Watertown Stadium and Milbank's 34-6 11A loss to second-rated West Central.

Playoff Games

Deuel 27, St. Thomas More 10 (Class 11B): The combination of the offensive line's blocking and Owen Quail's running in the second half sparked the eighth-seeded Cardinals (8-1) to a comeback win over No. 9 St. Thomas More (5-4). More led 10-7 at halftime.

The Cardinals took the lead on a 4-yard run by Trey Maaland midway through the third quarter and got two fourth-quarter TD runs from Quail (2 and 12 yards), who finished with 224 yards rushing on 35 attempts. Maaland, who had 51 yards rushing and 51 passing, also scored on a 5-yard run in the first half. Deuel compiled 307 yards rushing.

Robbie Begalka made seven tackles including a quarterback sack for Deuel's defense. Quail and Maaland each had interceptions and Tate Kenyon recovered a fumble.

More (5-4) led at halftime by getting a 12-yard TD run from Matthew Larson and a 21-yard field goal from JD Green in the second quarter. Larson gained 56 yards rushing. Lee Neugebauer passed for 120 yards, teaming with Easton Ogle twice for 50. Larson and Spencer Johannesen each finished with 10 tackles.

Castlewood 26, Timber Lake 0 (Class 9A): Lane Tvedt and Carson Kirwan combined to score four touchdowns to lead Castlewood (7-2) to the win. Tvedt scored on runs of 1 and 22 yards. Kirwan scored on a 41-yard run and a 38-yard pass from Tvedt. Tvedt completed eight of 14 passes for 136 yards. Kirwan rushed for 61 yards and caught two passes for 58. Jackson Schofield made two receptions for 55.

Jeremiah Wiersma had 7.5 tackles, Schofield six and Booker Schooley five for Castlewood's defense, which intercepted four passes.

Gracen Hansen rushed for 57 yards and passed for 47 for Timber Lake (5-4). Caleb Bieber made five tackles and Cole Ducheneaux intercepted a pass.

Hamlin 41, Viborg-Hurley 8 (Class 9AA): Luke Fraser scored four touchdowns and Tyson Stevenson passed for three for the Chargers (8-1). Fraser, who ran 22 times for 222 yards, scored on runs of 35, 46 and 15 yards and also caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Stevenson. Evan Stormo (70 yards) and Dawson Noem (34) each also had TD receptions from Stevenson, who completed nine of 19 passes for 249 yards. Noem caught three passes for 74 yards and Rylon Bawdon three for 55.

Kasen Prouty recorded 10 tackles, Stormo 9.5, Troy Randall Jr. seven and Fraser and Mason Trowbridge each six for Hamlin.

Brody Schroedermeier connected with Gage Goettertz on a 12-yard TD pass for Viborg-Hurley (4-5). Schroedermeier completed 19 of 29 passes for 163 yards, including five to Goettertz for 81. Wyatt Huber had nine tackles, Jacob Graves eight and Kaedan Maunu 6.5.

De Smet 50, Colome 0 (Class 9B): Britt Carlson threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others to lead the Bulldogs (6-3). He completed seven of nine passes and also rushed for 61 yards. Kadyn Fast added 64 yards rushing and two TDs and Trace Van Regenmorter caught four passes for 85 yards and a TD. Dylan Zell led the defensive effort with two quarterback sacks out of 17 tackles. Van Regenmorter and Dylan Rowliffe each added six tackles.

Freeman-Marion/Freeman-Academy 36, Florence-Henry 30 (Class 9AA): Riley Tschetter's third touchdown pass of the game, a 35-yarder to Evan Scharberg on the final play of the game lifted the Phoenix (7-2) to their second-straight win over the Falcons (4-5). FMFA won 36-14 in the regular-season finale.

Tschetter also scored on a 1-yard run and tossed TD passes to Matt Hagen (5 yards) and Maddox Kihne (11 yards). Dominic Sperling added a 7-yard TD run. Tschetter ran 14 times for 84 yards and completed 22 of 37 passes for 268 yards. Hagen caught seven passes for 104 yards and Kihne eight for 81.

Florence-Henry tied the game on Mehki Keller's 99-yard interception return and a conversion pass from Tegan Sumner to Clay Trupe with about five minutes remaining. Keller also scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards and Sumner on a 2-yard run. Sumner passed for 90 yards and ran for 50. Keller ran for 44 and caught four passes for 83 yards. Defensive leaders included Adan Moe (13 tackles, 2 sacks), Trupe (12 tackles, interception) and Sumner (12 tackles).

McCook Central-Montrose 34, Sioux Valley 19 (Class 11B): McCook Central-Montrose (8-1) outscored Sioux Valley (5-4) 28-6 in the middle two quarters to earn the victory. Boston Katzer completed 14 of 17 passes for 155 yards, teaming with Will Cleveland seven times for 98 yards and two TDs (56 and 30 yards). Jackson Grady also hauled in 33-yard scoring pass. Jackson Remmers contributed 139 yards rushing and a 6-yard TD run. Cleveland also returning a kickoff 79 yards for another score.

Carter Randall produced 10 tackles and Mason Sabers and Cleveland eight each for the Fighing Cougars.

Boden Schiller scored on a 10-yard run and a 93-yard kickoff return for Sioux Valley. Donovan Rose added a 13-yard TD run. Jace Christensen completed 15 of 30 passes for 133 yards. Schiller caught six passes for 61 yards and made 17 tackles. Rose finished with five catches for 36 yards and seven tackles. Christensen notched nine tackles.

Elkton-Lake Benton 32, Kimball-White Lake 18 (Class 9AA): The second-seeded Elks remained perfect (9-0) with the win that included another big game from quarterback Ryan Krog. He rushed 28 times for 176 yards and two scores and also passed for 87 yards and a TD to Quinten Poindexter. Riddick Westley contributed 63 yards and a TD. Blake DeVries recorded seven tackles. Poindexter and Garrett Neill each intercepted passes.

Kimball-White Lake (2-7) got 111 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Iden Meyers. Park Sinclair passed for 72 yards, including a 23-yard TD pass to Blake Leiferman.

Other Area Playoff Games

Class 9AA: Howard stayed perfect (9-0) with a 48-8 win over Britton-Hecla (4-5).

Class 9A: Philip improved to 8-1 with a 36-0 win over Estelline-Hendricks (4-5), Wolsey-Wessington (5-3) rolled past Deubrook Area (4-5) 41-0 and Gregory (8-1) handled Iroquois-Lake Preston (2-7) 50-0. No other details were reported.

Other Area Regular-Season Games

Tea Area 39, Watertown 6: The Arrows (3-6) closed out the regular season with a first of two back-to-back matchups against the Titans (8-1) at Watertown Stadium. Tea Area will host Watertown on Thursday in the first-round of the state Class 11AAA playoffs.

Tea Area took control on Thursday by scoring 25 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes of the first half. The spurt featured a safety that was followed 12 seconds later by a 71-yard kickoff return by Blake Thompson. Thompson (8 yards) and Slykhuis (1 yard) added TD runs and Chase Van Tol a 35-yard field goal. Van Tol (1 yard) and Thompson (7 yards) added second-half TD runs.

Thompson finished with 109 and Van Tol 101 of Tea Area's 224 rushing yards. Jackson Smythe tallied 11 tackles and Matt Halbur six.

Watertown scored in the third quarter on a 46-yard run by Juven Hudson, who gained 80 yards on 24 carries. Chase Christianson and Drew Denzer each made eight tackles, Austin Johnson seven and Simon Hendricks five.

West Central 34, Milbank 6: Justin Zirpel rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns (5, 4 and 46 yards) and also passed for 213 yards and two TDs to help second-rated West Central close out an 8-1 regular season. Owen Heath made three catches for 81 yards and two scores (14 and 9 yards). The Trojans also tacked on a safety.

Milbank, which ended its season 2-7, scored first on a 78-yard pass from Braylen Bowsher to Sawyer Gauer. Gauer caught seven passes for 137 yards and also had six tackles and two assists on defense. Barrett Schneck had eight solo tackles, one assist and a fumble recovery. Garrett Mertens passed for 135 yards.
