FOOTBALL: Here’s who’s competing in the 2022 Basilone Bowl senior all-star game

The ninth annual Basilone Bowl, honoring the top seniors in Somerset and Hunterdon counties, is set for 7 p.m. June 14 at Basilone Field at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.

The game, named for gunnery sergeant John Basilone, a Raritan native and World War II hero, is supported and promoted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Basilone earned the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Battle of Guadalcanal on Oct. 24-25, 1942. He re-enlisted and served in the Iwo Jima campaign, before being killed in action on Feb. 19, 1945.

Part of the proceeds go to the Basilone Memorial Foundation, which helps the Robert Wood Johnson Cancer Center and the Fisher House Foundation, which aids military families.

It’s Leathernecks vs. Devil Dogs. The Leathernecks will be coached by Montgomery’s Zoran Milich and his staff, as well as Watchung Hills’ Rich Seubert. The Devil Dogs are guided by Hillsborough coach Kevin Carty Jr. and some of his staff, newly named Bridgewater-Raritan head coach Rick Mantz and some of the Panthers’ assistants, as well as Bernards head coach Jon Simoneau.
