Football: Mead-Lutheran game called off due to weather
Sep. 3—LONGMONT — Dark clouds rolled over Mead High School right around the start of the second quarter Friday night, bringing with it waves of lightning and droves of rain and heavy winds that sent spectators racing to their cars.
A storm delayed the Class 3A top-five showdown between the Mavericks and Lutheran by 90 minutes before the game was then ruled unsafe to play Friday night.
Officials from both schools were seen meeting next to the high school to discuss contingency plans. No plan was officially finalized by 9:30 p.m. but the school said further information would be provided on the school's athletic site and Twitter in the next 24 hours.
When asked what he'd heard, Mead coach Jason Klatt said that the game was expected to be cancelled and not postponed to a later date.
"I've never been a part of this situation in 25 years," he said. "Usually it's like a postponement. Obviously if this was a playoff game we would turn around and either play it tomorrow or Sunday or Monday. Right now with it being so early in the season, I think they decided it was best for both parties if we just said cancel it."
Mead, ranked second in the latest CHSAA coach's poll, trailed 7-0 to No. 5 Lutheran when a series of lightning flashes delayed the game with 11:31 remaining in the second quarter.
The Mavericks opened their season last week with a 35-34 win over 4A Windsor. Senior Danny Brewington rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
