North 8, Wickliffe 7

North (1-1) secured a safety Friday night against host Wickliffe (1-1) to snap a 21-game losing streak and prevail for the first time in nearly three years.

Darrin Jenkins returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. He also caught four passes for 28 yards. Zi'Velle Thomas led the Vikings with 32 yards on six carries.

Things were in doubt until a fourth-quarter safety sealed things for North.

The Vikings hadn't won since Oct. 4, 2019, when they defeated Firestone 19-18. North finished the 2019 season with one victory after going winless from 2015-18.

Doug Miller is in the early stages of his first season as North's head coach. His predecessor, Sonil Haslam, died suddenly on Nov. 2, 2021, at the age of 46.

Avon 43, Medina 42

The Drew Allar era might be over at Medina, but you wouldn’t know it with the numbers Dan Stoddard put up in a heartbreaking loss.

Stoddard broke a school record when he threw for 624 yards in a 39-for-54, six-touchdown performance.

It broke Penn State freshman Allar’s 523-yard performance from a year ago and ranks sixth all-time, according to the unofficial Ohio High School Athletic Association record book.

Unfortunately, the efforts of Jack Wojciak, who scored a 61-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left weren’t enough.

Bees coach Larry Laird went for two and the Eagles (2-0) outlasted Medina (1-1).

“Danny is a competitor and he’s a dynamic athlete,” Laird said. “He doesn’t have Drew’s rocket arm, but he makes good decisions. We have a good receiving core even though they’re young.”

Brennan Schramm was Stoddard’s main target, catching 13 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns.

Carter Barnes was 7-for-14 for 74 yards for Cathedral Prep and threw one touchdown, but the senior was also intercepted by Hoban's Micah Rice.

Long added a rushing touchdown on eight carries and had 60 yards on the ground. “Offensively, we were able to get better and throw the ball,” Knights coach Tim Tyrrell said. “We did what we wanted on offense. … It’s a huge improvement from Week 1 to Week 2.”

Tallmadge 45, Ellet 6

Senior quarterback Ty Hurst set a Tallmadge (2-0) record for career touchdown passes in a victory over visiting Ellet (0-2).
