Football: O'Neill's Marek Arbogast named NY state Class C player of the year

Junior Marek Arbogast of state champion James I. O’Neill was named the New York state Class C football player of the year. The wide receiver caught 48 passes for 1,032 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a defensive back, Arbogast returned four of his eight interceptions for touchdowns. The O’Neill kicker, he booted seven field goals and 33 extra points. He also had one punt return and one kick return for scores.

Section 9 athletes who also received first-team honors are Port Jervis junior defensive lineman Ryan Ross in Class B; Burke Catholic senior running back Chris Leahy; O’Neill’s Isaac Visger (lineman) and senior Jordan Thompson (linebacker) and Burke senior linebacker Norm Peters in Class C.

Eight-man first-teamers include Tri-Valley senior quarterback Austin Hartman and senior linebacker Dylan Poley; Ellenville senior running back Casimiro Pomales; Spackenkill junior quarterback Dan Collins; and, Pawling senior running back Freddie Heymach.

The selections were made by the New York State Sportswriters Association. The large school selections will be released next week.
