Football: Pennridge names assistant Chuck Burgy new head coach

After a thorough search that included nearly two dozen inhouse and outside candidates, Pennridge decided the way to go was to stay close to home in finding its new head football coach.

Chuck Burgy, an assistant coach under Cody Muller for the past three seasons, was named to the position Wednesday night. Muller stepped down in May after four seasons and is moving to Arlington, Tex. where he will teach and coach the defensive line at James Martin High School.

"Mr. Burgy has been part of the Pennridge faculty for the past 12 years as a member of both the English and Business departments," Pennridge athletic director Scott Hegen said.

Pennridge senior running back Brennan Fisher, an Army West Point commit, will be a big part of new head coach Chuck Burgy's first team in the fall.

"Coach Burgy has been part of the Pennridge football program, at various points, since 2005. And we are excited to announce that the Pennridge School Board approved his appointment."

Burgy takes over a program with high expectations for the fall after a 7-5 showing last season which included a PIAA District One Class 6A playoff berth. Two years ago, the Rams reached the district final before losing to Souderton.

The 2022 roster includes senior linebacker Phil Picciotti, a four-star recruit who has narrowed his college choices to Auburn, Oklahoma, Michigan and Nebraska and running back Brennan Fisher, who has already committed to Army West Point.

"The role of head coach is a distinct honor and I accept this position with a steadfast commitment to our team, school and local community," Burgy posted on his Twitter account Wednesday.

"Over the past several weeks our players have demonstrated qualities, focus, perseverance, tenacity and resolve, that will undoubtedly carry us through future trials on and off the playing field. I am most proud of their fortitude.

"I want to extend my sincerest thanks to our coaching staff for their dedication to our team. I would also like to thank our administrative team for their leadership and continued support."
