FOOTBALL RESULTS: Big Central Conference and area roundup for Week 3

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

Hillside 28, Roselle 0: Caleb Sellers threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns, adding another on a two-yard second-quarter run to get things started and top-ranked Hillside remained undefeated. Salters connected with Al-Jamir Davis and Quanir Clark on TD passes, while Muwaffaq Parkman ran for 89 yards and a score for the Comets (3-0). Zamir Hawk and McNaully Erminal each recorded eight tackles in the win, while Darvens Tunis grabbed an interception. Roselle is 0-3.

FRIDAY’S RESULTS

Bernards 35, Voorhees 0: Connor Laverty threw four touchdown passes, including two to Nicky Koulfie, and Jake Caldwell returned a punt for a touchdown and grabbed an interception, and Bernards rolled to 3-1. Tommy Hanratty and Enzo Britez also caught touchdown passes for the Mountaineers. Simon Bramwit was a perfect 5-for-5 kicking extra points. Isaac Levitan recorded nine tackles to pace Voorhees (1-2).

Holy Trinity 45, Immaculata 42 (OT): Mason Geis completed 12-of-24 passes for 358 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Chadwick caught six passes for 182 yards and a score for Immaculata, but Holy Trinity scored a TD with 11 seconds in regulation to force overtime, and then responded to a Spartans field goal with another touchdown to win it.

Jackson Roberts caught a 30-yard touchdown pass and Joe Fleming rushed for 63 yards and a TD for Immaculata, which fell to 1-2. Both Spartans losses have come in overtime.

Will Grabko kicked three field goals for Immaculata, including a 40-yarder to open the scoring.

Bridgewater-Raritan 14, Hunterdon Central 7: Dane Sorenson’s fourth-quarter interception setup the winning possession, and Joe Spirra and Antione Hinton scored touchdowns, and Bridgewater-Raritan prevailed in a tight defensive struggle.

Spirra’s 47-yard run and Hinton’s 33-yard gain setup Spirra for a two-yard scoring run in the first quarter, with Sam Valeira adding his first of two PATs for the Panthers (2-2). The score remained 7-0 until the third quarter.

Hunterdon Central quarterback RJ Hart hit Trevor Fisch with a 23-yard pass on a 3rd-and-long to setup a 15-yard scoring pass from Hart to Fisch with 7:27 left in regulation, with Brian Kolody’s kick tying the game 7-7.

After BR was denied on offense, Sorenson INT gave the Panthers the ball on the Red Devils 24-yard line with 3:39 remaining, before Spirra’s 26 run tee’d up Hinton for the three-yard game winner.

Matt Maciolek grabbed an interception with 51 seconds left to seal it and Hunterdon Central fell to 2-2.

Rahway 27, Scotch Plains-Fanwood 7: Freshman Andrew Avent ran in two touchdowns and the Rahway defense did the rest, as the Indians moved to 3-0. Jakaii Wilson also ran in a TD for Rahway, while Kyle Hall grabbed a 17-yard TD toss from Amir Robinson in the win. Weston Fischer threw a 14-yard TD pass to Jacob Handy in the fourth quarter for the Raiders (1-3).

Governor Livingston 25, J.P. Stevens 6: Junior quarterback Michael Geertsma threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and senior linebacker Kyle Bade  paced the defense with 10 tackles, including two for lesses, and Governor Livingston turned in a second consecutive strong performance to improve to 2-2.

The Highlanders defense totaled nine tackles for a loss, and picked up two safeties. GL also forced two turnovers, getting an interception from junior safety Patrick Kingsley, and a fumble recovery by junior linebacker John Fajardo. Bade and Owen Chait recorded the safeties.

J.P. Stevens (0-3) held the ball for nearly the entire third quarter and got within two scores when Yasir Riddick connected with Andrew Mateo on a 38-yard TD pass. But sophomore Jack Dally closed the scoring for the Highlanders with his third TD run in his last two games. Vincent Fabio caught a 37-yard TD pass from Geertsma in the win.

Phillipsburg 48, North Hunterdon 21: John Wargo rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Caleb Rivera ran for 91 yards and two scores, and Phillipsburg scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away and secure the win in its home opener at Maloney Stadium.

Xavier Moore and QB Jett Genovese also ran in TDs for the Stateliners (3-0), while the quarterback also hit Matt Scerbo for a score. Kevin Burgess finished with five catches for 113 yards and an interception in the win.

Luke Martini hit Danny DeLucent with a 60-yard scoring pass in the first half for North Hunterdon (3-1), before a 22-yard Alex Uryniak TD run and a 28-yard scoring scamper from Kente Edwards pulled the Lions to within a score with 5:23 left in third quarter, before the Liners pulled away in the fourth.

Westfield 38, Elizabeth 20: Peter Del Re Opened the game with a 92-yard kick return for a touchdown and Westfield scored five more unanswered to take a 38-0 lead into halftime and never looked back.

Trey Brown threw TD passes to Peter Meixner and Chris Rossetti, while Aidan Harper added a scoring run for the Blue Devils (2-1). Luke Jordan returned an interception for a second-quarter score to cap the Westfield scoring.

Henry Hipschman kicked a 32-yard field goal in the win, and was 5-for-5 kicking extra points.

Michael Saugus caught a 30-yard TD pass from Vito Tropeano for Elizabeth, while Zion Risher and Cesar Gomez added TD runs for the Minutemen (1-2). David Lazo kicked two successful extra point kicks for Elizabeth.

South Hunterdon 21, Middlesex 0: Bode Dunn rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown, adding another score on an 18-yard catch from Tanner McCaffery, and the South Hunterdon defense did the rest as the Eagles notch their first shutout, improving to 3-0. McCaffery also ran in a 2-point conversion, while Matt DelVecchio kicked field goals of 42 and 38 yards in the win, and was successful on his lone extra-point attempt. Brayden Hinman grabbed an interception and Garrett Swayhoover collected 16 total tackles in the win. South Hunterdon has allowed a touchdown or less in each of its games so far. Middlesex fell to 1-2.

Delaware Valley 33, New Providence 14: Quarterback Jack Bill ran for three touchdowns and Patrick Garlinghouse added two more and Delaware Valley surged late to avenge last year’s playoff loss. The Terriers remain undefeated, moving to 3-0. Jackson Zarinko ran in a touchdown and threw for another for New Providence (2-2). Ben Gullo was on the receiving end of the Pioneers' TD pass.

Colonia 28, Linden 25: Jaeden Jones and Colonia continued their hot start with the win over Linden. Jones rushed for three touchdowns and threw for one as the Patriots improved to 4-0. Pat Miller caught a touchdown pass and made four extra points in the win. Linden fell to 1-2.

New Brunswick 28, Franklin 26: Samad Hicks rushed for 117 rushing yards and a touchdown as the Zebras (1-3) earned the win. Yasir Johnson added 75 yards on the ground with two scores and Eli Rodriguez rushed for 40 yards and a TD. Franklin fell to 0-3 with three close games.

Spotswood 28, Highland Park 6: Trey Lazar scored three times as Spotswood earned the methodical win and improved to 3-1. Lazar finished with 117 rushing yards unofficially on 18 carries and scored on a pair of 2-yard runs in the second half. He also caught three passes for 44, including a 30-yard TD from Evan Baureko. The senior QB also rushed for a 6-yard score and ran in a two-point conversion (10 carries for 48 yards). Anthony Christian added 10 carries for 60 yards. John Lubin was 2-of-2 on PAT attempts. Spotswood led 14-0 at halftime after a scoreless first quarter. Highland Park fell to 0-4.

South Plainfield 53, North Plainfield 30: Pat Smith rushed for four touchdowns as South Plainfield remained undefeated at 4-0. The explosive junior rushed for scores of 60, 55, 18 and 1 yards. The Tigers got balanced scoring against their former Thanksgiving Day rival. Jason Greer scored on an offensive fumble recovery and Josh Tovar went 80 yards on a fumble recovery for a TD. Additionally,  Michael Green scored on a 37-yard run and Zac Bolesta had a 27-yard TD reception. Justin Hannon handled the kicking duties. North Plainfield fell to 0-4.

South Brunswick 29, East Brunswick 14: Khiri Summers scored two touchdowns as the Vikings earned their first win of the season after two competitive losses to North Brunswick and Old Bridge. East Brunswick (0-3) took a 7-0 lead when Ben Solimini bolted for a 65-yard score in the first quarter. Summers’ 15-yard run later in the quarter tied it at 7-7. The Vikings took a 15-7 lead into halftime after Jalen Jackson caught a 12-yard pass from Vin Jairdullo. The combo also connected on the 2-point pass. In the third quarter, Summers raced for a 70-yard TD and Jacob Brokaw added a 35-yard run for another score. Solimini closed the scoring with a 5-yard run for EB. Matthew Grzelak was 3-of-3 in PATs in the win.

St. Joseph 29, Union 19: Omari Jones rushed for a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs and the Falcons improved to 3-0. St. Joseph quarterback Daniel DeGennaro opened the scoring with a 1-yard run in the first quarter. The Falcons got a safety to take a 16-7 lead into the intermission. Jeremy DeCaro scored the Falcons’ final TD with a 27-yard run in the fourth quarter. Union fell to 0-3.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS

Dunellen 51, Belvidere 13: Chiekezie Ogbuewu had a huge night rushing for 144 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns as Dunellen (2-1) won its second-straight game at Columbia Park. The senior scored on runs of 80 and 5 yards. Amor Johnson added 61 rushing yards on 11 carries and a TD, while Aidan Sangiray rushed for two short touchdowns. Additionally, Anthony Hatz joined the balanced attack with 59 rushing yards on six carries and a 34-yard TD run. Sam Gonzalez also had a 2-yard scoring run. The Destroyers led 16-7 after the first quarter and 31-13 at halftime. For Belvidere (0-3), Gavin Chamberlain rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Manville 46, Dayton 7: Shawn Purcell continued his hot start, rushing nine times for 195 yards and four touchdowns, and catching a 55-yard touchdown pass from Danny Wildgoose in Manville’s big win. Purcell, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound senior, scored on runs of 63, 59, 5 and 39 yards for the Mustangs (3-1). Brandon Rivera added 48 rushing yards on six carries and a score, and Naquavere Thomas rushed for a TD and recovered a fumble in the win. Geoffrey Mathis had an interception in the victory. Dayton fell to 2-1.
