Football roundup: East Lansing rallies to victory, Portland and Williamston prevail

Jace Clarizio had the go-ahead touchdown in the middle stages of the fourth quarter while helping the East Lansing football team rally to a 21-15 victory over Portage Central on Thursday.

Clarizio finished with a team-high 68 rushing yards, with 48 coming on his TD for the Trojans, who are ranked No. 8 in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association's season-opening Division 2 poll.

Kanye Jackson had a pair of touchdown runs in the second half and finished with 10 tackles for East Lansing. Central Michigan commit Evan Boyd had six catches for 90 yards, while Dalen Adams threw for 128 yards. Kieran Jackson added 11 tackles for East Lansing and Taveon Demps had six stops and an interception.

PORTLAND 36, OVID-ELSIE 8

PORTLAND -- Drew Miller had two touchdown receptions and ran for a score while helping the Division 5 No. 7-ranked Raiders to the season-opening win. Miller finished with 63 yards rushing, 66 yards receiving and added six tackles on defense. Marc Nobis finished 6 of 9 passing with 135 yards and two scores and also had a rushing TD. Conner Kazamer added a TD run for Portland, while Barrett Brennan paced the defense with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Carter Kelley had a TD for Ovid-Elsie.

WILLIAMSTON 30, ZEELAND EAST 12

WILLIAMSTON -- Alex Petersburg ran for 120 yards and two scores and threw for 63 yards and a score to lead the Hornets. Noah Dunckel had 73 yards rushing and a TD and Hunter Eifert had a receiving touchdown for Williamston.

MASON 69, OKEMOS 0

MASON -- AJ Martel had six carries for 146 yards and three touchdowns for the Division 3 No. 10-ranked Bulldogs in their win over the Wolves. Kaleb Parrish had two catches for 61 yards and two scores – both from Cason Carswell for Mason. Malik Popp had seven tackles and Ethan Bunting had two sacks to lead the Bulldogs defensively.

BATH 20, MT. MORRIS 6

DeVondre Chandler had a pair of touchdowns while helping the Bees to a season-opening win. Chandler had a 59-yard touchdown reception in the opening quarter and a 63-yard interception return for a score in the final quarter while leading Bath. Bradlee Uhlmann added a 94-yard touchdown run and finished with 115 yards on the ground for the Bees. Uhlmann also had an interception.

LAKEWOOD 33, BATTLE CREEK PENNFIELD 28

LAKE ODESSA -- Cole Anderson racked up a game-high 196 yards rushing and two touchdowns to push the Vikings to a season-opening home victory. Nathan Willette notched 103 yards and two scores to go with a 15-yard passing touchdown. Anderson and Ethan Weller each led the defense with a team-high seven tackles for Lakewood.

DURAND 50, LAINGSBURG 31

LAINGSBURG -- Quarterback Ty Randall threw for a game-high 193 yards, ran for 58 yards and scored three total touchdowns for the Wolfpack in a nonleague loss to Durand. Jack Borgman ran for a team-high 81 yards and a touchdown and hauled in six receptions for 62 yards and Connor Hulliberger had 54 yards receiving and a score for Laingsburg.

BRIDGMAN 54, MAPLE VALLEY 6

VERMONTVILLE -- Ayden Wilkes threw for 55 yards and a touchdown for the Lions in a nonleague season-opening loss to Bridgman. Wilkes connected with Cameron Carpenter for a 29-yard passing score. Jesse Deppe led the defense with a game-high 10 tackles for Maple Valley.

CALEDONIA 35, HOLT 0

CALEDONIA -- Seneca Moore threw for 93 yards for the Rams in a road defeat against Caledonia. Charles Thompson had 41 yards receiving yards for Holt. Isaiah Foster paced the defense with nine tackles, while Carloes Speed had a fumble recovery for the Rams.
