Late football roundup: HLWW runs through Paynesville

Sep. 12—HOWARD LAKE — A 246-yard, five-touchdown performance by Collin Boese pushed Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted past Paynesville on Friday night.

The Lakers' football team won the Mid State 2 District matchup, 43-34.

Boese had TDs of 53, 2, 15, 32 and 3 yards. HLWW ran for 382 yards and did not throw a pass in the victory.

Bulldogs quarterback Grayson Fuchs completed 15 of 25 passes for 306 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. He also ran for 41 yards and a score. Eli Nelson was Fuchs' top receiver with seven catches for 132 yards.

Paynesville is at home against Sauk Centre at 7 p.m. Friday.

Pierz and Minnewaska combined for 37 points in the second quarter. Ultimately, the Pioneers prevailed for a Mid State 1 District victory at Glenwood.

The Pioneers outgained the Lakers on the ground 317-85. Derek Stangl ran for 85 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Quarterback Garrett Cummings ran in three scores for Pierz.

PJ Johnson accounted for both of Minnewaska's touchdowns, with an 82-yard TD pass to Austin Ballhagen and a 2-yard scoring run. Ballhagen had two catches for 134 yards.

The Lakers stay at home to play Melrose at 7 p.m. Friday.
