Football scoreboard: Roncalli D fuels 14-7 win; Kienholz's 7 TDs too much for Central

Aberdeen Roncalli controlled much of the first half, building a 14-0 lead en route to a 14-7 Northeast Conference high school football victory over Deuel Friday night in Clear Lake.

Abe Kretchman scored on an 18-yard touchdown scamper in the fist quarter, and Maddox May added a four-yard run in the second quarter to account for all of the Cavalier points.

Roncalli quarterback Jackson Isakson appeared to score on a run of about 30 yards with three seconds remaining in the game, but the play was called back because of a holding penalty. Roncalli ran out the clock on the next play.

Deuel's defense was stout in the second half, but couldn't stop Roncalli on the last drive of the game as the Cavs picked up two fourth-down conversions.

The vast majority of the Cavaliers offence, roughly 200 of 250 yards, was on the ground.

Deuel's score was set up by an interception deep in Roncalli territory. Quarterback Trey Maaland scored from a yard out to cut the deficit in half.

As was the case in the season opener against Groton, the Cavalier defense controlled play, holding the Cardinals to 76 yards of offense. In two games, Roncalli has given up just one score and fewer than 150 yards of total offense.

May finished with about 80 yards rushing, Isaksson 57 and Kretchman 45.

With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in the NEC. Deuel is now 1-1 overall and in conference play.

Roncalli travels to Redfield Friday for another NEC road contest.

Pierre eases past Aberdeen Central as Kienholz accounts for 7 touchdowns

A strong showing against five-time defending Class 11AA state champion Pierre in last year's playoff semifinal did not carry over to this season's season opener for Aberdeen Central.

The Governors picked up a 54-15 victory in Eastern South Dakota Conference high school football play Saturday night in Pierre.

Star quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, a University of Washington commit, threw for six touchdown passes and added a seventh on the ground.

No 1-ranked Pierre (1-0) was up 42-7 at the half, and the Golden Eagles (0-1) could never catch up.

Central's two scoring plays were exciting ones. But in both cases, the Governors answered with big plays of their own.

In the second quarter, first-year starting quarterback Dustin Hermansen found Spencer Barr on a 76-yard strike to get the Eagles on the board. But, Kienholz, naturally, answered with an even longer touchdown pass to make it 34-7.

Then, in the third quarter, Central running back Karson Carda broke loose on a 65-yard scoring scamper. On the kickoff, through, Pierre's Jayden Wiebe went end zone to end zone. His return accounted for the final points of the game.

There's no reprieve for the Golden Eagles next week as they host No. 2 Tea Area (1-0) in the home opener at Brownell Activities Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
