Football season is over. That might be good for Colts fans, ranked 3rd drunkest in the NFL

If the 2023 Colts football season left you reaching for a bottle of alcohol, you're not alone.

A recent study analyzed which professional football fanbase might've consumed the most beer, wine or liquor during the 2023-24 NFL season and determined that Indianapolis Colts fans had the third-highest blood alcohol content in the country, tying the Atlanta Falcons with an average BAC score of 0.085%.

Any BAC score above 0.08% is considered legally intoxicated in the state of Indiana and elsewhere in the U.S.

Results from the study showed the No. 1 drunkest NFL fans, with an average BAC score of 0.093%, were people who likely cheered for the Tennessee Titans. Conversely, fans of this year's Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs drank the least.

Who created the rankings of the NFL's drunkest fans?

The rankings were created by BACtrack, the makers of a portable breathalyzer device that connects to a user's smartphone, allowing them to know when they've passed the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle.

How did the company collect people's information?

BACtrack collected data on blood-alcohol levels on more than 28,000 of its app users from September 2023 until January 2024 during the regular NFL season. The results were collected anonymously from 6 a.m. the day of a regular season game to 6 a.m. the day after the game, the company said.

The information the company collected came from U.S. users who opted into sharing their data, having location services turned on, and allowing the BACtrack app to access their smartphone’s Bluetooth.

How accurate are the results?

While the BAC scores are likely accurate, take the teams people rooted for with a grain of margarita salt. The company used a map of NFL fan allegiance from social media data created by Matt Sorenson to associate BAC results with NFL teams across the country, stressing the data does not represent results from all fans of a particular football franchise.
