North Mac football player voted Springfield high school athlete of the week

North Mac football player Zane Hogan was voted as the State Journal Register's athlete of the week.

Hogan earned 46 percent of the 2,788 votes, beating out Pana football player Monte Weddle (34 percent). Full results are below.

Hogan, a senior back, carried the ball 10 times and ran wild for 225 yards and three touchdowns as North Mac defeated Staunton 32-6 in the South Central Conference. Hogan had TD runs of 50, 46 and 40 yards.

Parker Boatman, Sacred Heart-Griffin boys soccer

The senior standout recorded the hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Williamsville in the Class 1A North Mac Sectional final on Saturday. His first two goals lifted the Cyclones ahead 2-1 in the first half. He notched an insurance goal for a 4-2 lead in the second half. SHG advances to the North Mac Supersectional against Belleville Althoff Catholic on Tuesday.

Hailee Daigh, Mount Pulaski volleyball

The senior setter helped Mount Pulaski to wins over Mason City Illini Central, Williamsville and Jacksonville last week. Daigh totaled 52 assists, six blocks and four service aces in the victories.

Amber Ehrlich and Simmi Mander, Chatham Glenwood girls tennis

The doubles team finished in fourth place at the Class 1A state tennis finals in the Chicago suburbs over the weekend. As a 5-8 seed, Ehrlich and Mander won four straight matches to get to the semifinals, including beating a 3-4 seeded team from Chicago Latin. They settled for fourth, finished the season 24-3 and led Glenwood to ninth-place in the team standings with 13 points.

Daniel Giacomini, Williamsville boys cross country

The senior tallied third place in 15:55.80 and the Bullets garnered first place as a team in the Class 1A Petersburg PORTA Regional on Saturday. Senior teammates Avery Glasgow (16:26.70) and Nolan Bates (16:38) earned fifth and sixth, respectively.

Sydney McAfee, Pleasant Plains volleyball

The junior hitter led the Cardinals with 17 digs, eight kills and two aces in a 25-23, 25-21 nonconference win over Lutheran on Wednesday. She also had 20 kills and nine digs in a 25-27, 25-19, 25-19 nonconference win over Rochester on Monday.

The senior quarterback accounted for eight touchdowns in Jacksonville's 70-49 Central State Eight Conference win over Normal U-High. Owens ran for five TDs, threw for two more and caught a pass for a score from Deone Salther. The 70 points the Crimsons scored is a school record, eclipsing the 65 Jacksonville scored against Lanphier on Sept. 2.

Addison Qualters, Lincoln volleyball

The junior hitter/setter totaled 37 assists and 10 digs in a 16-25, 25-23, 25-22 Apollo Conference victory over Taylorville on Tuesday.

Monte Weddle, Pana football

The senior fullback sealed Pana's 21-7 South Central Conference victory over Carlinville with a 14-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Weddle finished with 88 yards rushing on 10 carries and he caught one pass for 17 yards. Pana clinched a share of the SCC title with North Mac.

Louisa Wilson, Williamsville girls cross country

The sophomore dominated the Class 1A Petersburg PORTA Regional meet in 18:18.20. Delavan’s Annabelle LaFary followed in 18:47.80.
