FOOTBALL: Verdigris starts season at No. 3 in AP poll

Aug. 23—Expectations are high for Verdigris in 2022.

That much was confirmed when The Associated Press preseason poll, released Monday, revealed the Cardinals as the No. 3 team in Class 3A. Progress sports editor Kevin Green is among the voters, which is made up of several media members across the state.

Verdigris, which opens the season Sept. 2 at Sperry, received 63 points in poll, landing it behind No. 1 Lincoln Christian (75) and second-ranked Heritage Hall (64). Travis East's team also received two of eight first-place votes.

Three other Rogers County-area teams made the initial rankings as well, with Collinsville leading the way at No. 3 in Class 5A while Owasso and Rejoice Christian came in at fourth in Class 6A-I and fifth in Class 2A, respectively.

Oologah missed the Class 4A top 10 but was the fourth team receiving votes with three.

First-place votes are in parentheses. Points for classes A through 5A based on 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring. Points for 6A (Division I & II), Class B and Class C based on 5-4-3-2-1 scoring.
