Football Week 3: Bloomfield-Killingly, Maloney-Darien matchups top the weekend schedule

As we head into Week 3 of high school football, there are plenty of good games on the schedule Friday and Saturday, including a matchup between two state champions.

Class L champion Maloney, which is undefeated at 2-0, will travel to Darien, last year’s Class LL champion, for a Friday night game. The two teams are in Class L this year so could potentially face each other at some point in the playoffs but this will be a good early season test. Bloomfield, last year’s Class S runner-up, will take on Class M champion Killingly on Friday night.

Here are some games to watch this weekend:

Bloomfield (2-0) at Killingly (2-0), Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Bloomfield has shut out its first two opponents, Avon (40-0) and Plainville (49-0) but a much more formidable foe awaits Friday in defending Class M champion Killingly. Killingly has also demolished its first two opponents - Montville 48-0 and NFA 56-6. Bloomfield sophomore Edwin Rodriguez is averaging 83.5 rushing yards per game, while quarterback Darrien Foster has five touchdown passes and junior wide receiver Davien Kerr is averaging 63 yards per game. Senior Howard Simpson leads the team in tackles (11.5 per game). Bloomfield’s defense will have to find a way to stop junior running back Soren Reif, who is averaging over 200 rushing yards per game and has six touchdowns.

Cheshire (2-0) at Conard (1-1), Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Cheshire has wins over New Milford and Hillhouse while Conard lost to Staples in the season opener 41-13 then beat Newington last week 36-33. Cheshire junior quarterback Matt Jeffrey, a highly-recruited lacrosse player, leads the team in rushing (135 per game).

Shelton (2-0) at Windsor (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.

Shelton shut out Hand last week 28-0 after beating Ridgefield in the season opener. Junior RB David Dojlidko leads the team with five touchdowns. Chilli White had three touchdowns last Friday for Windsor - which lost its opener to Wethersfield by a point - in a 26-6 win over New Britain.

Maloney (2-0) at Darien (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.

Maloney, last year’s Class L champion, will take on Darien, last year’s Class LL champ in a good test for both teams, who will both compete in Class L this year. Darien lost its first game to St. Joseph, 14-0 but shut out Bridgeport Central 47-0 last week. Maloney’s senior quarterback Kyle Valentine was 13 for 20 with 207 yards and three touchdowns in the Spartans’ win over Simsbury last week.

Barlow (2-0) at Wethersfield (2-0), Friday, 7 p.m.

Wethersfield, which opened with a 21-20 win over Windsor, last year’s Class L runner-up and beat Manchester in Week 2, looks to continue its win streak. Junior RB Jova’n Hill leads the team in rushing (120 yards per game) and sophomore quarterback Cam Righi is right behind him (108).

Southington (2-0) at Greenwich (2-0), Saturday, 3 p.m.

Southington travels to Fairfield County for a Saturday game against unbeaten Greenwich, which has wins over Newtown and Ridgefield. Southington is led by senior Lincoln Cardillo, who has rushed for 300 yards and four touchdowns in wins over Newington and Hall.
