Forbes names Des Moines the best place for young professionals to live. Here’s why.
Des Moines is the fastest-growing major metro in the Midwest, with low rent and low unemployment rates. Recently, Forbes Advisor even named Des Moines the top best place for young professionals to live.
Forbes Advisor compared the 100 most-populous metropolitan areas, of which 99 had available data, across 10 metrics spanning four key categories: employment and pay, housing affordability, lifestyle and cost of living.
To find the top 10 best metros in the U.S. where young professionals can afford to live, Forbes Advisor calculated the estimated monthly mortgage payment for each area using the metro’s median home price, a 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 6.5% and a 10% down payment.

"In [Des Moines], you have the opportunity to affordably experience world-class amenities, catapult your career and have your fingerprints on the future of the region," said Tiffany Tauscheck, president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership in a news release.
