Ford Airport adds indoor animal relief area

CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An indoor animal relief area opened to air travelers and their furry friends this week at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

The airport near Grand Rapids already had an outdoor relief area to animals before passengers head through security. Airport officials told News 8 they got feedback saying another one be useful after the checkpoint.

“Now there’s an option for you to have your animals prepare themselves for a long flight,” Clint Nemeth, engineering manager at the airport, said. “Or if they’re coming off a flight, arriving to Grand Rapids, you can use that area prior to traveling to your final destination.”

The new station is part of the newly expanded concourse A. It offers dog bags for a quick cleanup and a small patch of synthetic grass that’s drainable, durable and antimicrobial.

“The waste that is collected won’t sit on top. It can easily be cleaned off with a hose,” Nemeth explained, adding that the station will be cleaned by staff once or twice per day.

There is also a fountain and bowl for pets to get a drink.
