Ford Honors the 1-2-3 Le Mans Finish with the Holman Moody Ford GT

It’s easy to look back at the Ford GT40’s history and focus on Carroll Shelby and the Shelby team’s success with Ford’s fabled prototype program. And, for good reason: Shelby’s team undoubtedly played a huge role in the GT40's victory at Le Mans, which was the entire point of the program.

Though, Shelby wasn’t the only factory-backed racing team preparing a fleet of GT40s. Ford’s NASCAR institution Holman Moody also played a role in the GT40’s monumental success and is now thanked with a special edition Ford GT.

The aptly named 2022 Ford GT Holman Moody Heritage Edition sports a special livery that celebrates Ford's long-time official racing contractor. This Ford GT wears a similar scheme to the number 5 GT40 MK2 that claimed third place in the famed 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. You’ve probably seen this gold and red paint scheme in the iconic—and controversial—final pictures of the race.

Aside from the limited-edition paint job, this is a Ford GT—one of the world’s most competent sports cars, powered by a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that sends 660 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. The gold livery also bleeds into the interior with gold appliques on the instrument panel, gold paint on the paddle shifters, and more.

Now, nabbing one of these won’t be as easy as heading to your local Ford dealer, signing papers, and driving away. As a limited edition, you’ll need to apply to add one of these to your stable. It’s unclear how many Ford will build, or how much it will cost you, though it’s safe to say the answers are: not many, and a lot.

Whether buying or lusting, you can still see one of these special Ford GTs next to the GT40 that inspired it at the New York auto show, which starts next week.
