Forest Fires in Algeria Kill at Least 65

At least 65 people have died in wildfires in northern Algeria since Monday, state television said on Wednesday, August 11, as a heat wave stoked wildfires throughout the Mediterranean.

This video, streamed live to Facebook on August 11, shows smoke rising over the northern city of Tizi-Ouzou in the Kabyle region. In the last few days, approximately 30 fires broke out in the region, local media reported.

At least 28 of the dead were soldiers called in to help residents fight the fires, reports said.

Prime Minister Ayman Benabderrahmane said the government was in talks to hire planes and called on the international community for help, according to reports.
