As they return to a full season of shows after a pandemic that shook the world, it is no coincidence that the 80th season opener at Oak Ridge Playhouse is a feel-good, laugh-out-loud musical that pays homage to a much simpler time.

But it is more than just the nostalgic tunes of "Forever Plaid" that will speak to audiences and have them tapping their toes at every doo-wop and shoo-be-doo. Forget the delightfully goofy script written by Stuart Ross that is sure to leave theatre-goers in stiches. It’s not even the unbreakable bond between the four, loveable goofballs (whom the show is centered around) that will have you googley-eyed. What people love most about "Forever Plaid" is its need for a direct connection with an audience and the happiness that only a live performance can bring. Combine it all and "Forever Plaid" soars!

In 1964, four male singers pile into their automobile to pick up new tuxedoes for their first, professional gig at the local airport cocktail lounge. However, their dreams come to a screeching halt when a bus full of Catholic schoolgirls (headed for The Ed Sullivan Show) crash into their car, killing them instantly. Stuck between worlds with everything to prove, they are reincarnated to present day and it is here where the audience meets the fellas of "Forever Plaid". With the help of their smooth harmonies, hilarious one-liners and heartfelt stories, the plaid lads put on a performance of a lifetime.

The angelic Plaids have distinct personalities and they bring out the best in one another. Frankie, the ringleader of sorts, is played by Bleu Copas. The bespectacled Smudge, played by Evan Broadhead, is the worrier of the bunch. Sparky, played by Braxton Kiser, is always looking for a laugh, while his stepbrother Jinx, played by Christian Labnon, struggles to find his nerves through most of it.

Regardless of your age, the familiar tunes and undeniable spirit of "Forever Plaid" will leave you feeling cheerful and reminiscent. A sweet blast from the past, this musical stands the test of time!

"Forever Plaid" opened Thursday, July 21, and runs select dates through July 31, with showtimes at 8 or 2 p.m., depending on the day.
