Seemingly forgetting what happened when Nazi Germany carved up Czechoslovakia in 1938, Slovak Prime Minister said Ukraine “must give up” part of its territory to Russia in order to end the war, Fico said on Slovak public broadcaster RTVS on Jan. 20.

“There must be some compromise...,” said Fico.  “What are they waiting for, the Russians to leave Crimea, Donbas, and Luhansk? That's unrealistic.”

Fico repeated Russian propaganda narratives, claiming that Ukraine is supposedly “not an independent and sovereign country” but “under the full influence and control of the United States.”

The pro-Russian prime minister came to power in December 2023 after his left-populist party Smer won the September elections. He has promised to stop arms supplies to Ukraine, block its potential NATO membership, and oppose sanctions against Russia.

A meeting between Fico and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal is scheduled to take place in Uzhhorod on Jan. 24. Fico intends to reaffirm his opposition to Ukraine's NATO membership during this meeting.
