Former Australia cricketer Symonds killed in car crash

STORY: Former Australian test cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds has died following a car accident in Queensland, Cricket Australia confirmed on Sunday (May 15).

Symonds, known for his swashbuckling middle order batting displays, was an accomplished all-rounder who played 26 tests for Australia.

Police said the accident occured in Hervey Range on Saturday (May 14) night.

The car Symonds was driving left the road and rolled, according to a police statement, in what it described as a single vehicle incident.

Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan:

"You know sad news for not only Andrew's family and friends, and condolences are with his family and friends. But Andrew is a legend. You know he is a legend cricketer and he's a legend Queenslander. So there'll be a lot of people who are grieving his loss of life today. Obviously there will be a full investigation in to what happened. But what a loss. He's a great man and certainly the cricketing and Queensland communities will be grieving today."

Symonds was a member of Australia's World Cup-winning teams in 2003 and 2007.

The 46-year-old had appeared in 198 one-day internationals in addition to his 26 tests.

His death occurred with Australian cricket still coming to terms with the passing of all-time greats Rod Marsh and Shane Warne, who both died in March.
