Former B’nai Israel Synagogue and School rededicated as new housing, performing arts space

A historic Pittsburgh landmark is back open with a brand new purpose.

The former B’nai Israel Synagogue and School in Garfield was officially rededicated as “The Carina” on Thursday.

Beacon Communities said there are 45 mixed-income apartments with a focus on the environment.

The building on North Negley Avenue is designed to use minimal energy and has rooftop solar panels.

The project also includes the rotunda, a space for performing arts and community events.
