Former Bartlesville-area preps battle on next level

Former Bartlesville High boys basketball standout Barron Tanner Jr. rang up 14 points — including three treys — and contributed a rebound, assist and blocked shot in East Central University’s 97-63 win against Northwestern Oklahoma. State.

In two subsequent games, Tanner’s production — or the team’s success — slid a bit.

In a 67-51 defeat against Southern Nazarene, Tanner tallied nine points — including two three-pointers — and pulled down six rebounds.

Southeastern Oklahoma outlasted East Central, 83-71, as Tanner contributed two points and three rebounds.

East Central is 9-8 on the season.

Following are updates of how other former local prep stars have fared in recent college action.

Chesnie Hewitt (Oklahoma Union)

Murray State softball

Hewitt and her Murray State teammates have been ranked No. 2 in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association Top 25 softball poll.

Murray State finished as the national runner-up last season. The team that beat them in the final, Phoenix College, is ranked No. 1 in the poll.

Six starters, including Hewitt, and three veteran pitchers return for Murray State.

Hewitt’s offensive stats last season included — .324, 13 doubles, two triples, seven homers, 35 RBIs, 64 runs scored and w8 walks.

Aidan Howze (Bartlesville)

Kansas women’s swimming team

Howze surged to fourth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.11) in a dual meet against Arkansas. She also finished sixth in the 400 individual medley (4:32.06) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.45).

Jace Hollingshed (Oklahoma Union)

Science & Arts men’s basketball

During a 90-63 loss to John Brown, Hollingshed came off the pine to dial in a three-pointer and record one steal and one assist.

He also scored two points and confiscated two rebounds in a 106-88 win against Oklahoma Panhandle State.

Elise Cone (Bartlesville)

John Brown women’s basketball

Cone recorded a rebound in a 75-71 loss against Southwestern Christian. She also produced a rebound and an assist in a 68-63 setback against Science & Arts.

Jena’ Williams (Bartlesville)

Rio Grande Valley women’s basketball

Williams spooned out four assists and netted two points in a 69-65 loss against Abilene Christian.

In a 71-65 setback against UT Arlington she handed out two assists.

Mary Cone (Bartlesville)

Oklahoma Wesleyan women’s basketball

Cone has made 18 appearances and is averaging 6.6 minutes per game. Her numbers include 1.0 ppg and 0.4 rebounds per game.
