Former Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo hired as White Sox bench coach

Former Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo has found his next job in MLB, joining the Chicago White Sox as bench coach.

The White Sox made the hiring official on Thursday as Montoyo will provide some valuable experience in the dugout beside first-time manager Pedro Grifol, who most recently served as the Kansas City Royals' bench coach.

Montoyo was fired by the Blue Jays on July 13 after guiding the team to an underwhelming 46-42 record to start 2022. John Schneider took over as interim manager — a tag the Blue Jays removed last month — and Toronto went 46-28 following the change.

The Blue Jays hired Montoyo to replace John Gibbons ahead of the 2019 season. His first season at the helm was a rebuilding year, but Toronto took a surprising step forward in 2020 by qualifying for the playoffs in the pandemic-shortened campaign. Montoyo was a finalist for American League Manager of the Year for his efforts.

The 57-year-old ultimately went an even 236-236 as manager of the Blue Jays.

Montoyo will now be tasked with helping turn around a White Sox team that underachieved in 2022. The roster is loaded with talented players like Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, Dylan Cease and Liam Hendriks, but injuries and underperformance sank Chicago's playoff hopes.

Grifol replaces Hall of Famer Tony La Russa as White Sox manager and knows he and his staff have an impressive core of players to work with. The key will be maximizing that potential.

“This is an extremely talented ball club,” Grifol said in his introductory press conference. “And it was a really difficult club to prepare for because if the energy was high, they can beat anybody in the game. And if the energy wasn't, we were able to have some success against them. My job — and my staff's job — is gonna be to make sure that that energy is high every night and we're prepared to win a ball game.”
