Former Boone, UF star Tommy Townsend earns punting job for Super Bowl champion Chiefs

Punter Tommy Townsend, a Florida Gators and Boone High alum, was named the Kansas City Chiefs punter Saturday after holding the position through most of preseason camp.

Townsend originally signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent earlier this year. He will serve as the defending Super Bowl champions punter, holder and back-up kicker.

“It’s super exciting. It’s my rookie season, rookie training camp and obviously it’s not how I would have expected my rookie training camp to go as far as the COVID precautions and stuff like that,” Townsend said during a Chiefs preseason press conference on Aug. 28. “But training camp has been going great and I’m real excited to get going for the season.”

Unfortunately for the Townsend family, it wasn’t all celebration this weekend. Tommy Townsend’s older brother Johnny Townsend was also trying to make an NFL roster after signing a free-agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. Johnny was released Saturday as NFL teams cut their rosters to 53 players.
