SALEM, Va. (WFXR)—Former Boys Home of Virginia assistant director and baseball coach Paul Siple was inducted into the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame as a part of the class of 2024 on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Siple, a graduate from Clifton Forge in the class of 1938, attended Bridgewater College where he went on to be a four-year letter-winner in baseball as the shortstop and team captain. After earning his master’s degree in 1957 from the University of Virginia, he competed in the National Semi-Professional playoffs in Witchita, Kansas.

Siple was hired by the Boys Home in 1960 and led the 1962-63 baseball team to a near-perfect season with a record of 17-1. Although the team saw success during his time at the Boys Home, he was highly praised for the impact his mentorship had on his players on and off the field. He embodied the mission of the Boys Home of developing each young man physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally to become successful men who positively impact their community.

“Paul was very competitive. When he was watching baseball, it was better to be silent and let him think,” said Mark Pifer, Siple’s stepson. “He had a true love for Boys Home. I am happy to see a table here tonight of Boys Home students and staff. I know that would have made Paul happy.”

Siple passed away in 2015 at the age of 93. In honor of his stepfather, Pifer accepted the award on his behalf alongside Siple’s daughter Beverley Ellis, and grandson Billy Siple.
