Former Buckeye Hunter Armstrong finishes world championships with seven medals

DOHA, Qatar (WCMH) — Former Ohio State swimmer Hunter Armstrong concluded a busy week at the FINA World Championships as the most decorated swimmer with seven total medals.

The Dover, Ohio native finished second to claim a silver medal in the 50m backstroke final in Doha, Qatar on Sunday morning. Australian Isaac Cooper beat Armstrong, the defending world champion, by 0.2 seconds while Poland’s Ksawery Masiuk took the bronze medal.

About an hour after that race, Armstrong swam the backstroke leg in the men’s medley relay that ended with an American gold. Team USA cruised to the win while the Netherlands took the silver and Italy the bronze.

The 23-year-old had his most decorated world championships of his career with three golds (100m backstroke, mixed medley relay, men’s medley relay), one silver (50m backstroke), and three bronzes (mixed freestyle relay, 4x100m men’s freestyle relay, 4x200m men’s freestyle relay).

Armstrong has won 15 total world championship medals and won the most medals of any swimmer at the 2024 championships with seven.
