Former Cal Poly baseball standout Mark Mathias has been called up to the Major Leagues.

Mathias, who starred at Cal Poly from 2013-2015, was called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, April 9, from the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians after shortstop Oneil Cruz suffered a fractured left ankle.

“It feels good. It feels good to be back up here,” Mathias told the news website triblive.com of his fifth stint in the Majors. “Unfortunately, the reason why I’m here — Oneil’s a great player, he brings a lot to this team — it’s unfortunate. But I’m happy to be here.”

He was immediately inserted into the starting lineup, playing second base against the Houston Astros on Monday. He has yet to get a hit in three starts, going 0 for 10.

In his professional career, Mathias has played in 49 games spread among the Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers, with a career .236 average, six home runs and 24 RBIs.

As a Mustang, Mathias secured the Big West batting title in 2014 with a .386 average and was named to the first-team Big West team in 2014 and 2015.

The 2014 Big West Field Player of the Year started his career with the Cleveland Indians as a third-round pick in 2015.

Mathias got his first call-up to the Majors in 2020 when he was with the Brewers, making him the 18th Cal Poly baseball player in program history to play in the MLB.

Cal Poly second baseman Mark Mathias was the Big West Conference Field Player of the Year last season when he led the Big West with a .386 batting average.
