Former Cavaliers return for Alumni Game

May 17—The sports season at Southern Lee High School has ended until the fall, at least for the players on the various teams. But the work behind the scenes to bring Cavalier athletics to the community never ends.

Saturday was a chance to raise some money to keep that tradition going, while letting some of the past Southern Lee basketball greats and former cheerleaders take to the court to help out.

The school's men's and women's basketball programs hosted the annual Alumni Game Saturday afternoon, with former players from the school's 15 years of existence taking to the floor for four quarters of wide-open, co-ed hoops. A total of 38 players participated, divided evenly between the Young Bucks, the graduating classes of 2014-21; and the Original Gangstas, the graduating classes of 2007-13. The Young Bucks won the game 144-139 in a game where the tone was set early on. In a wild first quarter of play, the OG's stormed out to an early 20-8 lead, but the Young Bucks turned up the pace and led 43-40 by the end of the first quarter. The teams kept running up and down from there in a hotly-contested battle.

Although the Young Bucks prevailed, the real winner was Southern Lee basketball and cheerleading, which used the event as a fundraiser.

Although the Cavaliers had a down year in 2021-22 as they moved into a much stronger conference facing larger schools, the school has a proud basketball tradition which it wants to build upon in the future.

The players participating were Christian Locust, Khalil Ridges, Sherrod Toomer, Cody Holder, Darius Gill, Michael Mellette, Adrian Brewington, Ce'Vaun Kinney, Julian Martin, Anthony Newby, Marco Depaz, Michael Foxx, Deshawn Scott, Darius Sellers, Stewart Judd, Nate Thompson, Raekwon Mclean, Antwan Ellerby, Antonio Jackson, Jalen Jackson, Sadarius Cross, Andrew Carnegie, Josh Lee, Se'vion Clay, Isaiah Monroe, Cameron Locust, Jarvis Jackson, Akeem Richmond, Tashaun McLaughlin, Jaymes Farrow, Tiara Bland, Nevaeh Williams, Yasmine Butler, Briana Jenkins, Olivia McNeill, Ashley Owens, Devin Daniels and Myah Ainsworth.
