LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Some people might think the battle for a republican chair between Pete Hoekstra and Kristina Karamo was the only political battle in Michigan, but those people might be wrong.

There are Michigan progressive democrats who are so angry over the president’s reluctance to change course on the Gaza war that they’re threatening the current president by asking former congressman Andy Levin to run for president.

But the potential candidate doesn’t seem as thrilled. “I haven’t been able to talk about that without cracking up,” Levin said.

Instead, Levin, who supports Biden, said no to that offer.

But, he says yes to a different strategy, which some Michigan progressives are aggressively pursuing.

In the upcoming presidential primary, they want democrats to ignore Biden and vote uncommitted to send the president a message on Gaza.

“They are concerned that Joe Biden can’t win Michigan and the presidency, the electoral college in November unless he changes course on Gaza,” Levin said. “Vote uncommitted so you can express your anger to the president.”

The current governor, and former democratic governor Jim Blanchard argue this is the wrong strategy, they say that Donald Trump can use it against the sitting president, and Biden could lose the election as a result.

But, Levin argues, if Biden does work for an end to the carnage in the Middle East, dissidents who might not vote as things stand will come back to the party.

“I think that a lot of these voters will come back and support Joe Biden in November,” Levin said. “Of course, Joe Biden would be much better than Donald Trump.”
