Former Country Day basketball coach takes position at Mallard Creek High

Former Charlotte Country Day boys basketball coach Dwayne Cherry will continue coaching next season.

Cherry, 44, is the new lead assistant at Mallard Creek, working under new Mavericks head coach Michael McNeil. McNeil’s appointment was announced earlier this week.

Cherry, who will teach math at Mallard Creek, resigned from his position at Country Day in March.

In 10 seasons as head coach at Country Day, Cherry’s teams were 126-164 and made seven postseason appearances.

Country Day was 9-20 last season and 0-10 in CISAA conference play. Since 2005, Country Day has had three winning seasons. Cherry’s teams produced two of them, going 18-12 during the 2018-19 season, and 19-14 in 2017-18.

Cherry’s son, Brandon, who played at Country Day last season, will transfer and play at Mallard Creek next season. Brandon Cherry will be a senior.
