Former Dayton Flyer guard goes off against Wright State

The Wright State Raiders had no answer for former Dayton Flyer guard, Dwayne Cohill, Sunday afternoon as the Raiders lost to Youngstown State, 88-77, at the Nutter Center.

Former Flyer Dwayne Cohill scored a career-high 43 points, going 16-19 from the floor, including 6-6 from three-point range. He also made all five of his foul shots. Cohill played from 2018-2020 as a back-up guard for the Dayton Flyers, including a member of the 2020 team that went 29-2.

Cohill missed the 2020-21 season with a torn left ACL and then transferred to Youngstown State following the season.

The Raiders trailed by as much as nine points, 26-17, with 7:58 left in the first half but outscored the Penguins, 19-6, the rest of the half to lead, 36-32, at halftime.

AJ Braun’s three-point play extended Wright State’s lead to 45-38 with 16;15 left to play. But Youngstown State battled back to take a 58-56 advantage following a three-pointer by Cohill with 9:20 remaining.

The game was tied at 60-60 following a basket by Amari Davis with 8:11 left but Brandon Rush’s trey put the Penguins up for good, 63-60. Cohill’s three-point play and four free throws by Bryce McBride was part of 10-0 run as Youngstown State led, 70-60.

The Raiders got within six points, 81-75, on a three-pointer by Trey Calvin but Cohills’s steal and dunk with 34 seconds left sealed the game.

Brandon Noel led Wright State with 22 points while AJ Braun added 17. Both Noel and Braun each grabbed eight rebounds. Amari Davis had 14 points. Trey Calvin was to seven points on 3-10 shooting.

The Raiders fall to 5-4 on the season, 0-2 in Horizon League play. Their next game will be Saturday night at Western Kentucky. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. from Bowling Green, Kentucky.
