Former Dinwiddie prosecutor killed by hit-and-run driver

DINWIDDIE — A former county commonwealth’s attorney was killed Thursday night when a hit-and-run driver struck him as he was riding a bicycle.

Thomas O. “Lanny” Rainey, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene on Flatfoot Road, State Police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said in an email. It happened around 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

A person driving a Nissan pick-up truck reportedly hit Rainey, Shehan said, and fled the scene. Evidence collected at the scene included part of a side view mirror with numbers on it that match a Frontier built between 2005-10.

A color description of the truck was not determined.

Rainey served as Dinwiddie commonwealth’s attorney from 1986 to 2003. He also co-founded the Hill & Rainey law firm.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the hit and run is encouraged to contact the Virginia State Police by calling (804) 609-5656 or by dialing #77 on a mobile phone. Tips can also be emailed to questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
