Former Disney Channel Stars to Reunite for LGBTQ+ Horror Movie

Disney Channel stars are reuniting for an LGBTQ+ horror movie that already has us ready for this unexpected rebranding!
From the title, Howdy, Neighbor! already sounds like something that would be perfectly at home on the Disney Channel, and the description reinforces that idea…at first. The film will follow a “young queer Millennial actor living in West Hollywood who was once a famous child actor,” per Variety. Things get weird once a new neighbor turns out to be a fan, and the protagonist and his BFF decide to investigate why this guy looks “oddly familiar.”
Matthew Scott Montgomery (So Random!) wrote the script and will star in the lead role, with fellow Disney alums Debby Ryan (Jessie), Alyson Stoner (Camp Rock), Kevin Chamberlin (Jessie), Tim Bagley (Raven’s Home), and So Random!’s Shayne Topp and Damien Hoss all joining the cast as well, creating a Disney Channel reunion where one might not have expected to see it. And to top it all off, Allisyn Snyder, who also appeared on So Random! and Sonny with a Chance as an actor, will be helming the film as director.
“The Suite Life of Camp Rock with a Chance is BACK, except we’re an LGBT+ horror film,” Stoner joked of the project. “Also, I wish we didn’t all have real stories that inspired this.”
She and Montgomery are both among the most visible former Disney Channel stars that have since come out as part of the LGBTQ+ community as adults — although it isn’t exactly a short list. And seeing a cast filled out with queer folks and allies from that era of Disney is sure to spark some nostalgia with the appropriate “glow up” twist.
The movie is expected to start filming before the end of summer, and we can only hope we won’t have to wait too long to see the final product!
