He allowed one hit in six innings, walked four batters, and struck out six to get the win.

Abbott is only the left-hander in the modern era of any team to toss six shutout innings with six or more strikeouts and no more than one hit allowed his big league debut, according to Stats Perform.

“Definitely a good way to start,” he said after the game. “Just try to go out there and do my best for the team and give them a best chance to win.”

He threw 28 pitches in the first inning but threw 77 in his final five innings. Abbott said he was nervous during the first two innings and was not happy about the four walks.

Tyler Stephenson and Stuart Fairchild each hit a home run to account for the Reds’ scoring.

Abbott was drafted in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft from the University of Virginia.
