Former Farragut standout Avery Strickland commits to Lady Vols basketball as Pitt transfer

Avery Strickland is coming home.

The former Farragut star announced her commitment to Lady Vols basketball out of the transfer portal Tuesday after spending her freshman season at Pittsburgh. Strickland started in 11 of her 30 appearances during the 2022-23 season. The 5-foot-10 guard entered the transfer portal in March after former Pitt coach Lance White was fired.

Strickland averaged 6.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game this season. She shot 38.3% from the field and 33.9% from behind the arc, and 115 of her 183 field goal attempts were from 3-point range. The Knoxville native scored a career-high 17 points in February against Georgia Tech, shooting 60% from the field and going 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

Strickland is the second player Tennessee coach Kellie Harper has added out of the transfer portal, joining former Belmont star point guard Destinee Wells in this year's transfer class.

Strickland originally committed to West Virginia out of high school before de-committing and signing with Pitt. She was a standout athlete in three sports at Farragut, winning a softball state championship as a junior and then becoming a state medalist in track as a senior.

As a senior, Strickland led Farragut girls basketball to its first state tournament and state championship appearances in program history, and the Admirals finished runners-up to rival Bearden in Class 4A. She averaged 17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
